UNM PhD candidate awarded the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment
PhD candidate from the University of Nottingham Malaysia Jessica Ooi Sui Ying was selected as one of the recipients for the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment.
The Merdeka Award Grant is designed for qualified and deserving Malaysians, between the ages of 22 and 35 to engage in short-term collaborative projects or programmes of up to three months, at an internationally recognised host institution in selected disciplines such as education, arts, sports, community and social work, environment, health, and science and technology.
The attachment aims to help the recipient build on his or her expertise by undergoing a learning experience in an institution or organisation of international repute and improving the grantee’s body of work and achievements.
Despite the hurdles faced during the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the Merdeka Award named Jessica, along with four others as its five grantees for the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment.
Jessica was awarded the grant for her proposal to develop a portable, inexpensive and simple to use device to rapidly detect ovarian cancer microRNA.
“During my attachment, I hope to learn new skills and techniques in the field of point-of-care diagnostics, and I would like to thank the Merdeka Award Trust for this opportunity” said Jessica.
