Updates from the School of Education

A total of three students from the University of Nottingham Malaysia’s School of Education have passed their PhD viva voce examinations in the months of September and October 2020, bringing the total number for the year of 2020 to seven PhD graduates.

Dao Nguyen Anh Duc whose thesis title was Critical Success Factors in Learning English Pronunciation: A Look Through the Lens of the Learner passed her viva on 23 September. On 8 October, Afsoon Fanaiyan followed suit with her thesis titled Multicultural Counselling Competencies of Malaysian School Counsellors: A Model Proposed Based on Students’ Perceptions, and on 22 October, Josephine Chay Choy Mee became the most recent PhD graduate from the School of Education with her thesis – Leadership and Student Outcomes: A Case Study of a High-Performing and a Low-Performing Secondary School in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to these three graduates.

The School of Education has recently begun organising a fortnightly event called the Alternative Research Lounge – initiated by Dr Tze Peng Wong, MA Special Educational Needs coordinator and Dr Csaba Z Szabo, Director of RKE. The event aims to bring students and lecturers together to discuss presenter-selected research papers in a relaxed, supportive, and friendly environment.

The aim of this research forum is to discuss and exchange knowledge about research that is not necessarily within everyone’s own area of expertise. The event also gives PhD students the opportunity to present their ideas or preliminary data before attending international conferences or annual reviews.

The first session kicked off on 21 October with PhD candidate Dao Nguyen Anh Duc acting as the speaker. She is a lecturer at Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and holds an MA in TESOL Studies from the University of Queensland, Australia and an MBA from Bolton University, UK. Her research interests are on pronunciation, phonetics, phonology and teaching methodology. Dao has presented papers at local and international conferences.

The second edition of Alternative Research Lounge will take place this Friday, 6 November at 4pm. This week’s speaker is Jessica McLaughlin, a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Education in TESOL at UNM. At present Jessica is preparing for her Final-Year Project on vocabulary learning and working memory. Jessica hopes to work at an international school before continuing with a Master’s in Education.

This week’s event will be followed by a special virtual social event. Participants are encouraged to prepare their favourite beverages and snacks to enjoy during the discussion. This is for everyone to feel less socially distant under the current circumstances.
