Alumni Sharing: From EEE to Management Consulting
On October 7, Careers Advisory Service organised an International Student Careers Series where an alumnus of University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM), Shahzaib Imran, has been invited to share his career journey to the students virtually via Microsoft Teams.
Shahzaib Imran is an Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) alumnus which he graduated in 2013. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Manager, Strategy and Operation of Management Consulting at KPMG Malaysia.
Key takeaways
During the session, Shahzaib highlighted that being committed and willing to strive for continuous learning is essential in the working world. In addition, he encouraged the audience to learn the art of having effective communication which also involving active listening, and not forgetting to smile frequently and be confident to exude one’s professionalism.
When asked about the factor that made him to diverge his career path from EEE to Management Consulting, Shahzaib shared his reason:
“I started to have passion in consulting since university, and since then I was active in ECA to explore on different roles. Furthermore, I have always wanted to help people solve their problems and make an impact to the society.”
He also added that management consulting position opens to any major of study as long as a person has the essential skills set, the ability to articulate one’s strength and most importantly, having interest on the job itself.
Advice to future graduates
Last but not least, Shahzaib left some best advice and insights to his fellow juniors who are going to enter the real future of work sooner or later.
- Always follow up with employers upon submitting your application.
- Make a genuine network with your friends, they might be the ones who share job opportunities with you.
- Improve your employability by enhancing your digital skills such as AI, Robotics, IoT to strive in the fast-paced digital world.
