UNMC Students Unleash Potential in Resume Competition 2015
The first step to enter the working world? Undeniably, by sending out a resume to the employers. University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) was eager to prepare their enthusiastic students for the better future and brought back the Resume Competition!
On December 2, 2015, Careers Advisory Service (CAS) of UNMC hosted the Resume Competition Prize-Giving ceremony, which took place at F3B09, from 3.30p.m to 5.00p.m. This competition, which drew participation of 285 students, offered students a great opportunity to polish their skills in resume writing.
Winners were selected by seven external judges from prominent corporation across all industries together with the head of CAS, Alicia Ch’ng, in 2 rounds of judging session. The respectable seven judges were Jaideep Patel from GTI Media Asia, Vignesh Baboo from General Electric (GE), Ng Mei Fong from Top Glove, Jo Ng from Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia, Daniel Tan from Zuellig Pharma, Jessica Loretta from Wipro Unza, and Zetty Zain from Dagang Nex.
Winners
The winners of both categories were presented with RM1000, RM600 for the first runner-up, RM400 for second runner-up and 3 consolation prizes worth RM150 each.
Undergraduate Category
Champion: Nur Shafieza (MEng Mechanical Engineering, Year 1)
First Runner-Up: Chen May Yie (BA FAM, Year 3)
Second Runner-Up: Lee Ziqi (BEng Civil Engineering, Year 3)
Consolation:
Thien Ton (Biotechnology, Year 3)
Alagumenal (Mechanical Engineering, Year 2)
Kong Shin Wei (Pharmacy, Year 2)
Postgraduate Category
Champion: Benjamin Chua (Master of Business Administration)
First Runner-Up: Abdullah Azam Noor (MSc in Electrical Engineering)
Second Runner-Up: Bhamini Bhujan (PhD Electrical Engineering)
Consolation:
Wei Ling Chow (PhD Chemical and Environmental Engineering)
Sana Altaf (MSc International Business)
Chan Wai Pin (MSc Biotechnology)
The winner for undergraduate category, Nur Shafieza felt grateful on her victory and expressed her gratitude to CAS for organising the competition.
“CAS should organise Resume Competition every year as it is a good platform for students to carry out some research to write a knockout resume and enhance their skill in resume writing. As for me, I took this opportunity to update my resume to become more marketable”, Shafieza said.
One of the honourable judges, Daniel Tan, the HR Associate Director of Zuellig Pharma Malaysia was interested in some resumes and even considered on hiring.
“As a recruiter, I like the concept of infographic resume. However, it depends on the recruiters. Some might like it, some may not. Try to avoid the information becoming cluttered”, Daniel said.
Jo Ng from Carlsberg Malaysia and Zety from Dagang Nex came to a consensus when they were asked about the difference between undergraduates and postgraduates resume.
They stated, “We as judges strongly agree that the resume of undergraduate students are better than postgraduate students. This should be a motivation for postgraduate students to use their experience and do better in the future”.
Meanwhile, Jaideep Patel, a publisher and editor of GTI Media Asia was really particular about grammar and spelling as those measures reflect the effort and skill of a student.
“Through the competition, students were able to receive first-hand comments on resume writing as they had a chance to connect with the judges over refreshment. Overall, the resume judging had led to job and internship opportunities for our students as some judges had requested the access to some our students’ resume to further consider them as employees”, Lai Chien Li, the project manager of the event expressed her thought on this initiative.
The prizes were presented by Prof. Ian Harrison to the winners and CAS thanked the judges, lecturers and students who involved in the execution of the event.
