Alumni Testimonial: Tan Shu Kuan (2013)

First of all, congratulations on being offered the opportunity to study pharmacy at the University of Nottingham! Trust me, the 2+2 programme is a great opportunity to experience campus life in Malaysia and the UK.

‘Why study pharmacy?’ and ‘why did you choose this/that university?’ – I believe these are common questions that you may be frequently asked. No one can be certain if your current decision is the best, but rest assured you do not need to place yourself in such a dilemma. It is enough just to know that the future will depend on your present or whatever you are currently doing. Hence just do your best and enjoy your current undertakings.

I graduated in 2013 and did my pre-registration training in an independent community pharmacy in West Bromwich, UK. Following that, I took up the challenge to practice as a hospital pharmacist, which was a totally different environment! I am now working at one of the government hospitals in Singapore. Community pharmacy and hospital settings are very different, not to mention the working culture in different countries. Regardless of whether you are a pharmacy student or a pharmacist, you will surely encounter different challenges. Having the right learning attitude is therefore very important to give meaning to what you do.

I have the deepest appreciation for all UoN lecturers for their guidance, coursemates and friends for supporting me throughout the 4-year MPharm, and colleagues both in the UK and Singapore for giving me such wonderful experiences throughout my career pathway. Please use the opportunity to make acquaintances, especially during your time at University, and try to get involved in activities and learn as much as you possibly can from everyone you meet! Always remember that learning is a never ending process. I would like to wish all of you the best, enjoy the moment, and good luck!

Shu Kuan is currently working as a hospital pharmacist in the Singapore General Hospital.
