Images of Postgraduate Experience Photography Competition 2018

This post is written by Dr Jiin Woei Lee, Research Training Development Manager.

The competition this year was launched on Mon 1 Oct 2018 with the theme ‘Motivation’. The question was “What does motivation mean to you as a postgraduate student? What keeps you going, what makes you stay excited or passionate about your studies, or maybe, what stops you from giving up? Show it to us in a photo and a caption of no more than 50 words.”

We had 17 entries from all faculties. All participants received a certificate of achievement. The Overall Winner and Runner Up were determined by academic judges. The People’s Choice was won by popular vote.

The winners were announced during the Graduate School’s Christmas event:

Winner: Chen Hsin Yuan, School of Psychology, Faculty of Science

Runner up: Mohammad Saad, Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering

People’s choice: Denesh Sooriamoorthy, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

It was wonderful to see the creative skills of students. The photos ranged from a soft toy to the scenery around UNM and Broga Hill. The captions that they wrote were inspirational. Here I will quote the winner’s caption “Morning dew is so clear and pure, reminding me to stay true to the very first goal when I started. Water falls in rain and snow, its versatility has inspired me to be as diverse as I can and I am the master of my destiny”.

Doing a postgraduate course can be a lonely journey and so I hope that the wisdom imparted by the entries will help others to stay motivated! The pictures and captions were put up in H1B12; feel free to take a look!
