News and guidance
Institutional updates
As you are aware, the University had announced the detailed guidelines for staff and students pursuant to FMCO. In case you missed it, please refer to the email dated 31 May 2021 by Provost’s Office for advice and guidance.
Following the latest guidelines, our interim Vice Provost of Research & Knowledge Exchange, Prof Andy Chan would like to take this opportunity to reiterate some crucial points relating to the limitation and restriction of postgraduate research activities on campus. In the University’s effort to cap the campus capacity in line with the government’s directives, please be reminded that all laboratories and research activities on campus are not allowed during this period. However, if you do need to access the labs due to some really pressing matters, please write in to your faculty for further consideration and approval. The University might revise this stand after 14 June taking into account of the situation and government’s directives.
We know and appreciate that this is a challenging time especially for our postgraduate research students as we are now back into a nationwide lockdown. In our continuous effort to mitigate the impact of this closure period, taking into consideration of the possibility of further extension, we will continue to provide succinct updates on what we are doing to support our postgraduate students during this closure period, through our C0VID-19: Graduate School updates.

Concluding a paper
Conclusions can be hard
Prof Pat Thomson from the School of Education, UoN, gives a few advice on how to write a stellar conclusion for your thesis or journal article.
“The conclusion generally requires bigging up what you’ve done. In a thesis you have to name and claim your original contributions. At the end of a journal article, you have say what readers now know that they didn’t know before they read your paper.”
