*Note: RSVP for face-to-face platform (on-campus) is now closed as seats are fully booked.
Overview
R is an open source programming language for advanced statistics and graphics. It has the advantage of being intuitive for users as they get a closer understanding and control of their data and it is extremely comprehensive. Although recently it became the lingua franca of data analysis in many fields, not many universities offer it for their students. This six-hour workshop provides a hands-on experience in using R. It familiarises learners with good practices in RStudio and enables them to do their own data analysis on different data sets. Following the session, learners will be able to apply the acquired skills to more advanced statistical procedures as well as enhance their own understanding of statistics depending on their needs.
Learning outcomes
1. Get familiar with RStudio and some of its functions
2. Learn some tips and best practices in it
3. Learn some basic descriptive and inferential statistics using R
-
-
-
summarise data for descriptive statistics
-
create plots to interpret relationships between variables
-
conduct correlation and t-test analysis
-
-
4. Gain some practical experience in analysing data in R
5. Enable problem-solving for independent learning
Facilitator
Dr Csaba Zoltan Szabo, Assistant Professor at the School of Education
Dr Szabo is currently the Director for Research & Knowledge Exchange and Postgraduate Research in the School of Education. His research interests include vocabulary acquisition and assessment in not only English but multilingual contexts as well. He is particularly interested in how lexical knowledge in English is influenced by prior language knowledge and the interaction between these languages within the mental lexicon.
Target audience
Early career researchers and postgraduate research students
Blended delivery
We are preparing a blended approach for this workshop with a combination of virtual platform and face-to-face (on-campus). We are adopting new arrangements to meet the new norms while ensuring all activities are conducted in a safe environment.
