Gathering of postgraduates over coffee and cake
Coffee & Cake, and Conversations!
We hosted our postgraduate students to a Coffee & Cake session on Friday 23 June 2023. This marked the second session of the year, and it was evident that our postgraduate students valued the avenue to briefly step away from their demanding schedules and indulge in a well-deserved break. Moreover, they relished the opportunity to meet up with our dedicated Graduate School staff, engaging in direct, open and meaningful conversations that fostered a sense of community and support.
In addition to extending a warm welcome to the postgraduate students and introducing our members of staff, Professor Maniam Kaliannan, Associate Dean of Graduate School, shared an update encompassing a range of exciting developments featuring our renowned public engagement initiatives – Postgraduate Showcase and Three Minute Thesis (3MT®), designed specifically to provide enriching opportunities for postgraduate research students. Professor Kaliannan further encouraged postgraduate research students to take advantage of these initiatives by taking part and making full use of the support and resources offered by us at the Graduate School.

Coffee & Cake, and Connections!
The first session of this year was held on Friday 17 March 2023. Adding a unique element, the session featured a PhD experience sharing by Dr Tan Shu Han, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Nottingham University Business School. Drawing on her own experience, Dr Tan shared about how the pursuit of PhD is both an enduring quest and a daring adventure, and why embarking on this academic pursuit was one of the best decisions she ever made, offering invaluable insights and inspiration to all in attendance. Connecting through her sharing, Dr Tan addressed some of the PhD challenges and provided some suggestions to alleviate the worries that some of our PhD students are having.
Our Coffee and Cake sessions are open to all our postgraduate students including postgraduate research students (PGRs) and postgraduate taught students (PGTs).
While social events as such have nothing to do with academic, they have something important to do with the overall student experience of the University. For our new and not-so-new postgraduate students, it is an opportunity for you to look around our Postgraduate Hub which is a dedicated space for postgraduate research students. It is also an opportunity to meet other senior postgraduate students whilst enjoying the free refreshments. As for the senior postgraduate students, it is a platform to temporarily get away from your work, relieve stress and catch-up with fellow postgraduate students.
