All women winners for Jan Atkin Prize 2021
The University of Nottingham Malaysia recently announced a list of all-women recipients for The Jan Atkin Prize 2021. The Prize was established by Emeritus Professor Brian Atkin, who was CEO of the University of Nottingham Malaysia from 2003 to 2008, in memory of his late wife Jan.
This prize aims to award worthy students who have met academic standards and are deemed to have made notable contributions to the campus, students or the local community. The winners are awarded RM5,000 in cash each and a certificate.
The recipients are Jessilyn Teh Jing Ying, 2nd year Mechatronic Engineering; Nurul Syahirah Mat Aron, PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Sharifah Khadijah Syed Razif, 2nd year, Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience.
Jessilyn Teh Jing Ying
Jessilyn was involved in a fundraiser for the SERUM Initiative to provide 202 beneficiaries from B40 communities with hygiene kits. She also volunteered for BruWILD between 2018 and 2019 to educate school students about wildlife conservation and gave a speech on “Plastic Pollution Awareness”. In addition, she was amongst the Top 20 s-CPD Scheme Achievers for three consecutive semesters. In June 2021, Jessilyn was selected as one of 222 candidates from 2,196 applicants to join Dewan Muda Malaysia (DMM), a two-year parliamentary programme by Undi18 and UNICEF Malaysia. During the summer break of 2021, she partook in the BINUS University International Thematic Camp as a UNM scholar and developed an app prototype to combat COVID-19 hate crimes.
Nurul Syahirah Mat Aron
Nurul Syahirah is the current Chief Secretary of Science and Engineering Postgraduate Student’s Council and Hall tutor of the Lankayan Hall. She is responsible for the welfare and well-being of the hall residents and in providing updates and suggestions in Student’s Council meetings. During the first year of her PhD, she facilitated a visit for a group of students from Zhejiang University, China, by organising a small conference to allow the exchange of research ideas between UNM and Zhejiang University. She also helped organise a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) workshop for PG students under the Postgraduate Students’ Network and chaired a beach clean-up expedition in Port Dickson during her undergraduate study. Apart from that, Nurul Syahirah has actively volunteered and taken part in many activities organised by various NGOs. For example, she helped distribute food to the homeless in the streets of KL with the Street Feeders just before the lockdown. She was also elected to represent the youth community at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2018.
Sharifah Khadijah Syed Razif
Khadijah served as the Head of Welfare Division in the UNM UN Youth chapter and organised programmes empowering youths to take action in altruistic values aligned with the UN agenda. She hosted a human trafficking advocacy workshop by Project Liber8, which obtained international recognition from the EU, UN Women and UNODC. In addition, she invited the National Autism Society Malaysia to engage UNM students in acknowledging autism in the education system for a safer and inclusive space for neuro-divergent individuals. Khadijah is the Head of the Community Outreach and Collaboration department at the youth wing of the UN Association Malaysia; she spearheads community engagement initiatives with ministerial bodies, civil society organisations, and think tanks. She has also worked with refugee communities through Doctors on Ground and was appointed as Head Secretary in the Executive Council. Her recent articles entitled “Only 65% of Malaysians Are Being Served By the Public Healthcare Sector” and “Grim Realities for Refugee Women In Maintaining Menstrual Hygiene” highlighting policy gaps in achieving healthcare equity and period poverty in refugee populations.
