UNM SEEN’s competition announces winners
The University of Nottingham Malaysia’s Sustainable Environmental Education Network (SEEN) organised an online competition between 13 October and 22 October. The winners of this year’s Floratography Competition were Daphne Chew Yee Tong, Foundation in Business and Management; Elena Chua Mae, Year 2 Chemical and Environmental Engineering; and Dhiveaysheon Sivakumar, Foundation in Engineering.
For this competition, UNM students were requested to submit a photo of their favourite plant at home and briefly describe the plant in 50 words. The prizes included Touch and Go vouchers of up to RM50 and flower seeds.
UNM SEEN had previously organised a physical event during the Clubs and Societies Fair 2019 for anyone who was interested in going green to gather and work towards similar environmental goals. However, due to MCO, other physical activities and competitions were restricted and online competitions and home gardening activities were organised instead.

Community gardening
“The community garden was established around the same time UNM SEEN was founded in 2016, and it is located near the Kapas and Pangkor Halls. SEEN consists of like-minded individuals from our campus community, alumni, and the public who share a passion for cultivating a greener environment through sustainable practices, workshops, and campaigns. It also provides a platform for students to initiate sustainability-related projects, such as the WasteNott and Gardening projects. UNM SEEN is a volunteer network supported by UNM Campus Services and Estate Office.,” explains Dr Chin Chiew Foan, advisor for the community gardening section of SEEN.
Since the lockdowns in 2020, UNM SEEN has shifted its gardening-related activities to home-based gardening activities through competitions. Nevertheless, fear not, the campus’ gardens are still maintained by passionate people on campus.
