Alumna receives award for final year project
University of Nottingham Malaysia alumna in Civil Engineering, Shams Khaled Elhosseny Ghazy Essawy, won third place in the Tan Sri Ir Yusoff Ibrahim Final Year Project Competition 2020 for her final year project (FYP). The title of her FYP was “Future-proofing Klang Valley’s veins with REBET: A framework for directing transportation technologies towards infrastructure resilience”.
Having had her FYP nominated as the best project across the department by her supervisor, Ioannes Yu Hoe Tang, Shams submitted her entry for the competition shortly after her graduation in July 2020. Shams’ entry was a report of her FYP in which she aimed to identify the types of technologies that had the highest potential of strengthening the resilience of transport systems and as a result, make the system safer to use. Her research was mainly focused on the transport network in the Klang Valley, covering all aspects of technology that affects modes of land transportation.
Shams said that while the competition was challenging, especially the Q&A session, where she had to defend her research choices and results, she also found it exciting.
“I feel very grateful to have been given this opportunity and I am glad to have such a supportive environment at the University of Nottingham,” added Shams, when asked about how the news of her achievement made her feel.
The competition was held on 24 November 2020 and the official awards ceremony is scheduled for April 2021.
