An Environmental Science student’s perspective on the inter-campus exchange programme
The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) offers a range of courses that enables students to go on an inter-campus exchange programme to our UK and China campuses. The inter-campus exchange programme is highly popular among students as this gives them the opportunity to travel to a new country and experience their diverse culture. One such inter-campus exchange program is offered by the School of Biosciences. All Biosciences undergraduate courses offer a UK campus exchange option, but students enrolled in the BSc Environmental Science degree might be interested to hear that this course now offers exchanges to and from both the UK and China campuses.
This year has been an exciting one for the BSc Environmental Science degree at UNMC, with students coming to Malaysia from the UK and China campuses as part of the inter-campus exchange programme. Luke Barnes, one of our inter-campus exchange students from the UK is currently spending his second year at UNMC. Luke decided to come to Malaysia so that he could experience the Asian culture, although it took him some time to cope with the climatic changes. Here is what Luke has to say about the inter-campus exchange programme and his stay in Malaysia so far.
‘Last year I took the opportunity to take part in the inter-campus exchange programme, leaving the UK campus to spend one year studying at the Malaysia campus. This decision has allowed me to experience a whole new culture, indulging in local foods and meeting new people. It has taken some time to get used to the heat, but so far my time here has been amazing. This is my first experience so far from home, everything from travelling around KL to making friends has been an adventure. Since the environmental science course operates on all three campuses, the class is made up of people with very diverse backgrounds which encourage people from different ways of life, culture and religions to mix and learn about each other. I found this prospect, particularly exciting since I have already experienced the value of making friends from different cultures back in England, for example, my girlfriend is Singaporean and I have other friends from both India and Sudan. The exchange experience offered by the university is certainly under-utilized by other students, and the value of this experience needs to be shared to encourage others to take the plunge.’
Like Luke other students also benefit from the inter-campus exchange programme as it allows them to gain a truly international perspective on environmental science challenges. The fact that students already participate in exchanges between UNMC and the UK campus, and the addition of a China campus option, therefore mark important steps forward for the course.
