Exciting events in the pipeline by the Nottingham Debate Society
The Nottingham Debate Society was established in 2019 and is the newest society on campus. Although still in its infancy, the society has established itself as one of the biggest societies on campus with 106 members.
President of the Nottingham Debate Society Vartika Khandelwal said: “We aim to empower students to develop a culture of intellectual discourse. Our society provides a platform for young minds to go out and explore the depths and breadths of societal, political, religious, and philosophical issues via debating.”
In addition, the society also provides a space for students to develop their public speaking and presentation skills plus boost their confidence and encourage teamwork – all of which play a key role in a student’s personal and professional development.
Since its inception, the society has debated on a number of interesting topics including transgender athletes, the political unrest in Malaysia, the legality of abortion, international news and politics, and friendships.
“We cover a wide range of topics and always take into consideration what our members might want to debate. Before the pandemic, we had two intense debates on whether transgender athletes should compete in sporting events, and legality of abortion with the members of PhirNott,” said Vartika.
The debate not only covered relevant issues but also served as an eye-opener for many as the debaters put forth a well-crafted argument and explored the intricacies of the topic.
For the Autumn semester, the society will have online collaborations with Taylor’s University Malaysia, Brickfields Asia College, and University of Macau on a variety of topics like the existence of organized religion, the existence of ethics in scientific research, and the role of social media in social justice movements. There is also a coaching session planned with Dinesh Subramaniam and Yan Cheng Lee, two of the country’s best debaters.
In the spring semester, the society plans to host a Speaker Event, where invited guests share their life journeys. Some speakers in the line up include Kuan Mun Leong, CEO Hartalega; Larissa Ping Liew, Miss World Malaysia 2018; and Pang Khee Teik, LGBTQ+ activist.
Also in the pipeline is the University’s first-ever Debate Open, with students from universities across Malaysia!
