Mapping Future through Biosciences Careers Day 2016

On 30 March 2016, Careers Advisory Service successfully organised Biosciences Careers Day in collaboration with School of Biosciences which supported by Biosciences students in Nottingham. The event was held at the Great Hall from 11am-5pm with an interesting theme, “Amplify Your Career DNA With Us”.

The careers day started with Career Talk on “Do’s and Don’ts for CV Writing” and “Facing Interviews” which presented by Ms. Shakira Kavanagh and Ms. Liang Hui Qian from WOBB.

“During the interview session, do express your confidence through your body language but be careful, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance,” Ms. Shakira highlighted the important part to avoid the common mistake done by the interviewees.

The careers day heated up by forum discussion on topics like “What the Industry is Looking For?” and “The Life of an Academic”. The respected panelists who participated were Chief Scientist II of Sime Darby Technology Centre, Dr. Yeap Wan Chin; Principal Consultant in FanLi Marine and Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Dr. Gopinath Nagaraj; Associate Professor from UNMC Faculty of Science, Dr. Stephanie Evers; Assistant Research Officer II of AAR-UNMC Biotechnology Research Centre, Dr. Gan Siou Ting; and Project Executive of J-Biotech, Mr. Fadhil Basery.

1The discussion had been informative and some panelists even included some humorous elements which made it enjoyable. In addition, the students had the opportunity to ask their enquiries to the experienced panelists. Besides that, Mr. Fadhil who is also an alumnus of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) shared his transition experience from a student to an executive in which the students can relate closely to their future planning.

Dr. Yeap also advised the students on how to survive in the industry, “Drop your ego, listen to people. Take and accept criticism as an encouragement. Face it with a positive mind.”

“Life rocks. Go out there for a damn party,” Dr. Gopi wittily concluded the discussion.

Careers Advisory Service would like to thank everyone who involved in the execution of the event.
