UNMC chemical engineering students win prizes in national design competition

Two groups of chemical engineering students from University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) won the first runner-up and consolation prizes for the 5th Chemical Engineering Design Competition 2016/7 organised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

Competition participants consisted of 11 teams from various public and private universities in Malaysia. The UNMC student group led by Mr Leap Wun Yip (supervised by Prof Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui) emerged as the first runner-up for the competition, and was awarded a cash prize of RM2000 along with a trophy. The student group led by Ms Angel Xin Yee Mah (supervised by Prof Denny KS Ng) won the consolation prize.  Due to the final examination that happened to fall on the same day, these students were not able to make it for the final presentation that was held at Heriot Watt University Malaysia (HWUM). However, with the help of HWUM, the students managed to make their presentation remotely through Skype.

Prof Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui said: “IEM is an excellent international platform for chemical engineering students to showcase their knowledge and understanding of the process design. At the same time, this is also a good opportunity for the students to meet their peers from different universities and people from the respective industries for feedback and exchanging ideas.”

Professor Denny KS Ng said: “This competition is very interesting and fruitful for our students. Not only that they are able to join the professional workshops organised by IEM, but they can also interact with the industrial judges. Besides, feedback is provided to allow students to improve their design work which take into account some practical situations.”

Prof Dominic CY Foo, one of the committee members and a judge for the IEM Design Competition, said: “The IEM Design Competition provides a good platform for undergraduate students to interact and learn from the industrial practitioners, in which they are exposed to the actual industrial setting. Besides, they also get to interact with students from other universities in Malaysia. This is the second consecutive year that our students won the top three prizes of the same competition.  Last year, the group supervised by Prof Denny KS Ng was the champion of the competition. It is indeed a tough challenge for our students, seeing that they are only year 3, while students from other universities are mostly year 4. However, we believe that it is more important for the students to learn something that will eventually benefit them during the process of the competition.”
