Vice Chancellor’s Medal 2021
On 16 February 2022, the University of Nottingham Malaysia will be hosting a ceremony to present the Vice Chancellor’s Medal 2021 to five members of staff, 14 students and four teams.
Every year the Vice Chancellor’s Medal is awarded to candidates from all three campuses who have had exceptional achievements in a particular field or area. The criteria for nominating candidates for this medal include outstanding contribution to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion in university life; notable endeavours which have made a difference to the University; a substantive contribution which has enhanced the reputation of the University of Nottingham; an activity which has had a noticeably positive impact for students, staff or the local community; and an individual achievement or sustained achievement over a period of time.
The year 2021 was special as there was an additional criterion to commemorate the heroes who had demonstrated exceptional achievements in supporting the response to the pandemic in any capacity.
The 2021 winners were mainly those who had performed exceptionally in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff team winners were chosen for their dedication to making the lockdown work for the University community of staff and students.
The staff winners for 2021 were Dr Lee Kean Wah, Muhamad Zainal Abidin Zainun, Professor Ir Law Chung Lim, Dr Vasanthi Sethu and Dr Sergio Camacho Fernandez. These are the staff who had stepped out of their comfort zones and ensured that the University continued to function optimally despite the national lockdowns.
The student winners for 2021 were Dhipan Raj Sundram, Angela Paul Peter, Masyitah binti Mohd Yusof, Ng Shuet Yee (Sabrina), Calvin Leong, Dulashini Sooriyarachchi, Harini Sankar, Nurul Syahirah Mat Aron, Saleh Shadman, Swetha Siva, Utkarsh Dipesh Gupta, Uzma Islam, Wong Wen Shu, and Muhammad Farhan Shahmi bin Abdullah.
The students’ achievements include contributions to hall or hall committee, sporting clubs, student societies, other Students’ Association activities or representation, volunteering in the community, being a student ambassador or student caller; carrying out fundraising initiatives, or various other activities within a School.
In the year 2021, some students created a positive impact in student life by using digital platforms to ensure their classmates remained in touch amidst the pandemic to ensure that they were not alone.
The teams that won were the four-member team of Hall Wardens, 40 members of the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s technical support team, another four-member group called the Laptop Panda team and two students who had taken the initiative to revive a disbanded literary magazine to spur the spirit of creativity, literature and free speech amongst the University of Nottingham Malaysia’s community.
