Established by the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2008, 3MT is now held at universities around the globe. 3MT contestant must condense their research into a brief, engaging presentation for a non-specialist audience, using a single presentation slide. The aim is to help research students develop their academic, presentation, research, and communication skills.

To allow the selection process of the ultimate winner between the three Nottingham campuses to take place late September 2014, UNMC will now hold its 3MT® competition during the first week of September 2014. Active PhD students who have successfully passed their first year confirmation review milestone (including thesis under submission) are eligible to participate. Graduates are not eligible, sadly.

The University of Nottingham winner will have the opportunity to go forward and participate in the prestigious Universitas 21 3MT® competition taking place in October 2014 (which has a significant travel prize).

A preparatory event and training session to help participants develop their 3MT presentation will be held on Wednesday 13 August 2014. Several peer review feedback sessions will be organised within two weeks leading up to the main event. During these peer review feedback sessions, participants will have the opportunity to practice their 3 minute presentation and be given feedback on elements they can improve on. Below comprise the dates of key events leading up to the 3 Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®):

  • 8 August 2014 (Friday) – Dateline for participants to register their interest
  • 13 August 2014 (Wednesday) – Workshop for participants
  • 5 September 2014 (Friday) – 3MT® Grand Event
  • 8 September 2014 (Monday) – Final training for eventual winner
  • 12 September 2014 (Friday) – Recording of UNMC 3MT® winner

More information comprising times and prize winnings will be confirmed late July 2014.
