Images of Postgraduate Experience 2018: People’s Choice

Waking up at 6 in the morning, beating the traffic and taking steps after steps in the chilly weather – all for the glorious view of the city from atop the hills. This has been my weekend routine for the past 10 months. Whenever I needed mental clarity, a break from the hustle and bustle around me or added motivation, hiking is my go-to activity. The sheer physical and mental energy that hiking requires mirrors my PhD journey that is of nothing less. As I make my way up the hill, I am reminded of my own physical and mental prowess which brings me to the thought that “If I can conquer this hill, I can conquer my PhD too”.
When I came across the email for the photography competition, the one thing that caught my attention was the theme. It was relatable and I knew that I would want to use this as a medium to share what motivates me as a PhD student. I personally enjoyed reading through every other entries and learning what motivated my fellow postgraduate mates.
What was unexpected is winning the People’s Choice Award. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who had graciously voted for my entry. It makes me feel humbled knowing that the thing that motivated me, in some way has motivated you too. Apart from that, I would also like to extend my heartiest congratulations to both my co-winners.
Finally, my advice for the upcoming participants of the competition would be to just stay true to what motivates you. Capture it through the lens, express it from the heart and share it to the world. In the end, I wish that may we all find the motivation that we need to hike through this challenging journey called PhD as the promised view is worth it. Cheers!

What drives a person through an excruciating hike is the promised breathtaking view in the end. Similarly, I tread through this rocky called PhD in search of my own view in the end – the ability to make a powerful change.
