Call for participation
Recent trends in nanomaterials and technological applications
The Nanotechnology Research Group is pleased to invite postgraduate research students whose research interests span nanotechnology to a series of workshops on recent trends in nanomaterials and technological applications. Whether it is fundamental technical development or downstream applications, the workshops are open to participants from both FOSE and FASS.
The first workshop of the series is scheduled for Monday 14 September 2020 at 10am – 2.30pm. It aims to create a community of individuals with shared interests in nanotechnology and further identify priority research questions that have the potential to draw on our strengths at UNM through multi-disciplinary collaboration and fit into Malaysia’s research priority areas defined by Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
To register, please submit a short proforma addressing the following questions and send it to RAD@nottingham.edu.my by today 7 September 2020.

The Habitat Foundation Research Grants
Support for research to strengthen biodiversity and habitat conservation in Malaysia
The grants are open to postgraduate research students and academics. The value ranges from RM10,000 to a maximum of RM25,000 and may be used to cover field expenses, equipment, communications & awareness, and meeting costs.
Proposals should fulfil some or all the following criteria:

focus on species and habitat of conservation significance;
-
seek to address an important conservation question or issue;
-
have the potential to improve conservation practice or contribute to more effective conservation actions;
-
be conducted in collaboration with local people, organisations and/or government partners.
Applications are to be submitted to thf@habitatfoundation.org.my before 30 September 2020.

Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics
This online workshop delved into the new version of the University’s Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics. It was conducted by Dr Soma Mitra, Associate Professor at the School of Biosciences and Chair of the Science and Engineering Research Ethics Committee at UNM on Tuesday 25 August 2020.
Creating surveys with Qualtrics
This online workshop explored the many functionalities of Qualtrics, a widely used survey tool in academia, in creating surveys. It was jointly conducted by Mr Jaya Kumar Karunagharan, Head of Foundation in Science; and Dr Chuma Owuamalam, Assistant Professor at the Division of Organisational and Applied Psychology, on Monday 24 August 2020.

“When one of my students first submits their work to an academic journal I always walk a weird tightrope in giving encouragement and managing expectations. On the one hand, I want to tell the student how good their work is. On the other, I need to prepare them for the fact that rejection is a very possible, and often likely, outcome. This post is the blog form of that conversation.“
