Taster Session for Foundation In Science (FIS) students

The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) School of Pharmacy hosted a taster session for UNM Foundation in Science (FIS) students interested in learning more about the programmes offered by the School.

The session aimed to introduce students to fundamental concepts, the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen healthcare profession. The taster session consisted of various hands-on activities, providing FIS students with an invaluable opportunity to learn more about the programmes and to explore their own interests and passions in the field.

Students were divided into groups and engaged in a variety of activities related to the programmes offered by the School, which include:

1. Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) – 4-Year Programme

This newly launched four-year undergraduate programme provides students with a thorough education in the basic sciences and an in-depth understanding of pharmacy practice, capitalising on our successes in pharmacy education. Students will learn about the most recent advances in technology and innovation, as well as the ethical and legal aspects of pharmacy practice. Students will be based in Malaysia for all four years of their studies and register as a pharmacist in Malaysia after completing their pre-registration training that takes place after graduation. Intake begins September 2023.

2. Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (BMS) – 3-Year Programme

The BMS programme prepares students for various careers in the healthcare industry (pharmaceutical, biotech, and cosmeceutical), with a general focus on biology. Students will gain hands-on experience and the opportunity to conduct original research as part of the programme, gearing them up for a fruitful career in academia, the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

3. Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Health Sciences (PHS) – 3-Year Programme

The PHS programme prepares students for a wide range of careers in the healthcare industry, with a general focus on chemistry. Graduates from the programme will be well-equipped with the knowledge and skills required for pursuing further studies at the graduate or postgraduate level and various roles in the healthcare industry.

4. Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) – 4-Year Programme

Our longest-running programme prepares students for a pharmacy career in the UK and Malaysia. Students will spend the first two years of their studies in Malaysia and the final two years in the UK. It is the only programme offered in Malaysia that allows for UK pharmacist registration. The programme delivers a comprehensive education in pharmacy and the sciences surrounding pharmacy practice.

In addition to the above programmes, the School also offers a number of professional development workshops and short courses designed to help students stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of pharmacy and biomedical sciences.

From these programmes, graduates could become healthcare professionals and make a real difference in the everyday lives of others. Given that an aging population is becoming a global trend, the demand for competent healthcare professionals will continue to rise.

Most students who participated in the taster session reported that it was informative and beneficial. They also found that the opportunity to interact with academics from the School of Pharmacy provided them a realistic view of the field and the potential career opportunities available upon graduation.
