Leading Enterprises Join UNMC Careers Fair 2014

The annual University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) Careers fair was held on 19th March 2014. It was organized by the Careers Advisory Service at University of Nottingham and saw participation from 27 of the leading business enterprises in Malaysia this year. These local and international corporations from various industries were actively recruiting at the fair and showed huge interest in the diverse talent pool UNMC has to offer.

Our students are in demand and their skills are highly valued by the employers. In fact, The University of Nottingham is the most targeted university by top employers, according to the latest study by High Fliers Research,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC, in her speech at the opening ceremony.

Maybank and Shell were platinum sponsors while Nestle and Ecoworld were gold sponsors for the UNMC Careers Fair. Aside from these, other renowned companies that took part in the fair included Accenture, AmCorp Group, CIMB Group, Digi, Ernst & Young, GSK, Graduan, GTI Media, Hilti, IBM, ICAEW, IJM Group, Jobstreet, Lintramax, Mah Sing Group, Maxis, Mondelez, O.Y.L Group, Public Bank, PwC, SP Setia Berhad, Sunway Group and UOB.

The UNMC Careers Fair drew in over 800 students who registered and attended the event with great enthusiasm. They brought along their resume to explore different prospects in their target job market, seeking both jobs and internships. The students also pursued advice from top company professionals on job applications and planning their careers.

In general, the careers fair has provided us (students) with a great opportunity to interact with the company representatives and helped us to get better knowledge of potential opportunities the companies have to offer. The fair has been a success this year and I am looking forward to the next fair that Careers Advisory Service will hold.” commented a satisfied engineering student when asked about the success of the Careers Fair.

The fair involved a variety of activities to support the students and build their interest in the professional arena. Representatives from Jobstreet provided free ‘Resume Clinic’ services at the fair where students had their resume revised and built it to be more appealing to the employers. Other activities include interview rooms prepared for participating companies to conduct follow up interviews with potential students. Students were offered a cup of fresh brewed coffee as incentives for speaking with the company representatives present during the fair. The fair ended with a high-tea networking session where students had the opportunity to interact with HR professionals from participating companies.

The networking session served as a good platform for students to communicate with company representatives in a relaxed atmosphere, which is a good thing as the informal setting helps minimize the gap between employers and potential employees.” said Alicia Ch’ng, the Head of Careers Advisory Service

The UNMC Careers Fair was another huge success this year with students duly satisfied by the activities and participating companies highly impressed at the potential UNMC offers. When asked for feedback on the students they met at the fair the representatives said,

The students at Nottingham are highly professional, very eager to learn and able to think outside of the box. These are good qualities that we are looking for when hiring fresh graduates. We look forward to meeting more enthusiastic students in the next Careers Fair.
