Present your research at our Virtual 3MT®

The average doctoral thesis would take 9 hours to present. In this competition, you only have 3 minutes!

The challenge is for research students to explain the complexity and relevance of their research to a non-specialist audience in a concise and engaging way.

This year’s 3MT® will now take place entirely online where you will present your research virtually live to a panel of judges. It is a great way to improve your academic, presentation and research communication skills. The winner will represent UNM at the tri-campus round and possibly, the International Vitae 3MT® competition. We have a track record of success in the tri-campus round with an achievement of winning Highly Commended Award at the 4th annual U21 3MT® competition.

We remain as dedicated as ever to providing specialist support to participants and thus we strongly encourage our PhD students to take part in the competition.

Raya greetings

A pantun for those celebrating raya during these challenging and restricted times this year

One of our members at the Graduate School wrote a pantun (Malay poetry) where she dedicates it to fellow Muslims, especially those who have to celebrate raya away from families and friends due to the ban on balik kampung (going back to hometown).

***

Pergi Langkawi naik feri,
Ingin melawat makam Mahsuri,
Dengarlah nasihat yang diberi,
Duduk saja di rumah sendiri.

Beli teh ais ikat tepi,
Bungkus sekali roti planta,
Tahun ini raya dalam PKP,
Jangan berendam air mata.

Anak kecil berlari-lari,
Sambil yang tua memerhati,
Duit raya kami tak beri,
Tapi ingatan terpahat di hati.

Naik basikal menuju ke kota,
Ingin membeli ikan tenggiri,
Ampun and maaf kami pinta,
Selamat menyambut aidilfitri.

***

In brief, the pantun depicts the unprecedented reality of celebrating raya this year amid movement control order (MCO or PKP in Malay) due to the ongoing pandemic. Unable to meet families, relatives and friends during this festive occasion, the MCO measures are indeed a difficult adjustment for some. Although social distancing and the ban on balik kampung may have dampened the raya festivities, the pantun leaves a comforting message of gratitude, forgiveness and happiness.

In advance, we at the Graduate School would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslims Eid Mubarak and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.
